Hostile Commissioner stands for MHK
It is alleged that Brian Stowell had shown that he was not a fit and proper person to be in office as either a Commissioner or an MHK, that he was vindictive and hostile, had a duplicitous nature and self-interest and as such could never truly represent the best interests of the electorate. He should do the decent think and resign from Politics altogether and a full inquiry should be made into his hostile actions and inappropriate comments.
As a JP and former Chairman of Onchan Commissioners, Brian Stowell had exhibited hostility towards the providers of the Squash facilities (in Onchan Park) had behaved in an inappropriate manner in a number of other instances and had failed to comply with a directive issued and approved by Tynwald entitled “The Best Practice Principles of Corporate Governance”.
A Petition for Redress of Grievance has been presented to Tynwald stating that a Prima Facie case had been set out regarding these matters as a result of documentation provided in a complaint to the Attorney General’s Chambers.
Events began when he should have declared a conflict of interest, as a Director of another facility, which owned squash courts, (Read More) and not taken any part in either the discussions or the vote on the future of the squash courts in Onchan owned by the Commissioners to avoid a situation that had the potential to undermine his impartiality between self-interest and public-interest or suggestions of abuse where political corruption is defined as “the clear abuse of public power or office by government officials for personal gain”. Brian Stowell’s actions instead were to become wrongfully, personally and directly involved. He went out of his way acting without authority in arranging interviews on local radio stations during which, without any justification, he displayed hostility and improper conduct by ridiculing members of the squash fraternity describing them as fools, stupid, rubbish and naive. He also described the Chairman of the squash governing body and his colleagues as “unfit to be permitted to work with young people” (Read More) and even stated ludicrously that one of them was a former friend of Reggie Kray! (Listen to: Stowell labels squash fraternity as ‘fools’) (Listen to: Stowell claims people saying ‘I want to keep squash’ is ‘Stupid’) (Listen to: Stowell labels business plans as ‘rubbish’)
Brian Stowell is on recorded as saying “The Squash Club provides a valuable amenity and should be retained” and “I have always wanted to retain the Courts at Onchan for Squash” (Read More). However when questioned on the radio he contradicted these comments by confirming that he had actually cast the deciding vote against retaining squash, in favour of a dancing school which, establishes his appalling duplicity. The Petition states that Brian Stowell’s actions and conduct were so unfair as to constitute an abuse of his office to gain personal satisfaction in the demise of the squash facility, which he had gloated publicly in achieving. (Read More)
When his actions and hostility were later reported he denied the facts and instead issued written threats of legal action, which had no substance and came to nothing. (Read More)
Public interest and opinion in the recent media hysteria surrounding the News of the World scandal has shown that there is no future roll for anyone in either private corporations or political life who abuses their position, acts unfairly, distorts or makes threats to suppress the truth and as such is not a fit and proper person to hold office. Some high profile figures have had to resign from office as a result, just because they were heads of department when such situations occurred, let alone any suggestion of being personally and directly involved, as he was as Chairman, presiding over the loss of the very same squash courts the Commissioners had specifically built for that sport.
He was also dominant in a tenancy dispute over the squash courts (Read More), which became a fiasco, when the High Court ordered over £10,000 avoidable costs against the Commissioners (Read More), which were imposed on the ratepayers.
Onchan currently has three good and respectable MHK’S who represent the community well, Adrian Earnshaw, Peter Karran and David Quirk.
We feel there is no place in Politics for Brian Stowell and would urge every one to think carefully before voting for such a Man.
