Personal gain and revenge in the demise of the squash facility.
To refer to the content of the following four documents again now, years later, shows that they were prime reasons for not granting the new lease to the squash fraternity. A grudge had become an abuse of office as it expanded into hostility, inappropriate behaviour and self-interest seeking personal gain and revenge in the demise of the squash facility.
Political corruption is defined as “a clear abuse of public power or office for personal gain.”
Document One
Email from Mike Hayler, Chairman of IOMSRA to Commissioners on 12th April 2010.
“Dear Onchan Commissioners
I have contacted some of you individually to ask where we have gone wrong with our attempts to keep the squash facility at Onchan.
While the SRA has nothing against the dance group they do already have a venue, which they use without affecting our future. If the planned structural alterations go ahead at Onchan destroying perfectly good, well used squash courts, you will be killing off squash courts on the island.
As I said before, if the courts at Onchan are lost IOMSRA might as well disband. I am sorry if we have not put our selves over effectively before, but the SRA will do whatever it can to secure the future of these courts.
When considering the bids I was told that the income from the lease was not the only issue so we took this and weighted the SRA’s response in line with our key goals, to promote and develop squash on the island, and we highlighted the essential nature, which Onchan has to allow us to meet that goal. As you can see the SRA is dedicated to continue its development.
This has lead to increased teams and more events and if the courts are lost I cannot see where we can go.
Can I thank those of you who spared me your time this weekend.”
Document Two
Email reply from Brian Stowell, to Mike Hayler on 12th April 2010 09:41.
“Dear Mr Hayler
To help answer your question asked in the email I received this morning “Where Did We Go Wrong” I will attach a copy of the letter that I sent to you on the 29th March 2006. Also I will attach the flyer circulated by the club at that time.
I have always wanted retain the Onchan Courts for squash but for some reason members and the SRA all supported The Hamilton’s bid for a PUB.
For a prolonged period I and Mr D Crellin were subjected to a concentred campaign of hatred and insult.
Lies were published and members called for us to be forcibly removed from office. My family were subjected to telephone calls threatening violence and members of your association were at pains to inform me that Mr Hamilton was a former friend of Reggie Kray.
Emails were circulated encouraging people not to vote for Crellin or Stowell in any election and flyers were handed around the district again, filled with blatant lies and venom.
I believe that sport is an excellent opportunity to build the character of young people who take part and the adult members; particularly the organisers, should set a good example.
It seems that your proven tactic is one you are attempting to repeat. I did my very best to explain to you how to compile a bid to present to the Commissioners but you did not go ahead with it.
In full and mature reflection of events I believe that you and your associates are unfit to be permitted to work with young people. I feel that the example that you have set is a disgrace and I encourage the Minister to take action that will preclude you from continuing in office.
You have had every opportunity over the last year to organise and prepare a proper bid to run squash in Onchan but you have not done so. The decision has been taken and it is now passed the closing date and the building has been offered to another.
You should now show some good grace and bow out like sportsmen!
If you would like further information please call me on 451357.
Brian Stowell”
